What we'd actually buy

Tape earns its keep by being the fastest fix for a punctured bivy, a split boot seam, or a cracked handle, and none of that has persuaded a single contestant on record: across all 19 tracked season and spinoff files, no recorded ten item list names duct tape. The catalog's lone entry for the category is an example product with nobody attached, in a category where the axe has verified winner picks by exact model.

The trade that keeps it off lists is that its whole value is breadth, and the multi tool already owns breadth with an actual winners' record. A repair item with no track record has to beat the most proven utility pick on the show for a slot, and it never has. That said, tape's specific strength, instant airtight patching that no blade or plier can replicate, is real, which is why it stays a staple of trips that do not run under a ten item cap.

Our verdict splits on the rules. Under Alone constraints we would leave it and accept sewn and lashed repairs, letting the multi tool take the slot. For any trip without the cap, carry a full roll of a fiber reinforced cloth tape rather than a travel wrap, because there is no restock in the field and half measures on quantity defeat the point of a redundancy item.
