Bear Canister on Alone

Bear fear has ended more runs on this show than bear raided food ever has, and that is the whole case against this item. Wayne Russell and Josh Chavez both left season 1 over bears, season 2 lost Tracy Wilson to a bear scare and Desmond White inside roughly six hours after finding scat near camp, and Clay Hayes won season 8 after facing down a grizzly directly. Not one of those five, or any of the 187 tracked contestants across 19 season and spinoff files, carried a bear canister.

A canister answers exactly one question, keeping stored food sealed and out of reach, and the record says that is not the question contestants actually face. The two who cited a weapon deficit wanted a way to deter the animal, not a place to hide their fish, and the axe, knife, and bow already on most lists cover that better than a locked barrel does. Meanwhile the canister burns a full slot on a single function in a system where the pot, saw, and multi tool each do three jobs.

So we would not buy one for an Alone style trip, full stop. A length of paracord and a hung cache do the storage job without spending a slot. The honest exception is regulatory rather than tactical: plenty of real backcountry jurisdictions require a hard sided canister, and if your trip falls under one of those rules, that is a different trip than the show runs.
