What Zach's pack had to handle

At 22, Zach Gault was the youngest person in the Season 3 field, and his kit reads older than his age. He was the only contestant in this group to spend a slot on a dedicated sharpening stone, a two sided coarse diamond and ceramic model, the classic tell of someone planning weeks of daily blade work. His Battle Horse Knives Dutchman, full tang, is the single item on the list with a recorded brand; the 25 inch axe with a 2 pound head, folding saw, 13 centimeter billy can, and minus 40 Fahrenheit bag all went unattributed in the research.

That sleeping bag matched the coldest-rated anything in the season's cast, and his fishing kit was rigged heavier than most, 80 and 20 pound test with 25 hooks, built for bigger fish than the light lines his castmates favored. Our take

The run lasted 8 days and ended in ninth place, and it ended in the rarest way this show offers: the gear itself did it. Gault cut his arm with his own axe and was medically evacuated, making his one of the very few exits in our records where an item on the list, rather than hunger, cold, or the mind, directly closed a season. That deserves to be said without any tone of blame. An axe swung daily is a managed risk for every contestant who carries one, including the ones who ran fifty-plus days on this same terrain. Gault's preparation suggested a long game; the odds simply came up wrong on a single swing in week two.
