Alone Season 12 Episodes: The Complete Episode Guide, Recapped

June 23, 2026

Spoiler note: this covers who won season 12, episode by episode, through the finale.

Season 12 ("Alone: Africa") moved the show out of the cold for the first time, dropping ten contestants into South Africa's Great Karoo desert. Water scarcity and heat, not frostbite, drove most of the tap-outs, and the season ended after just 34 days, the shortest complete run on record.

Day ranges are approximate for the first two hours, which each follow half the cast over the same opening days. The pacing tells the season's story on its own: four of the ten contestants were gone by day 5, covered in just the first three episodes, while the final hour has to span a full week because only three people were left to film. No other season's episode guide compresses this way.

Episodes 1-3: the desert claims four people in five days

"The Land of Great Thirst" opens the show's first desert season with half the cast. Kelsey Loper lands the season's first big-game kill, a roughly 55-pound warthog she smokes for later, Katie Rydge catches an orange river mudfish on day 1, and aggressive baboon troops establish themselves as a recurring hazard. Jit Patel taps out on day 4 with a severe gastrointestinal illness.

"Best Laid Plans" introduces the other five, including eventual finalists Nathan Olsen and Baha Mahmutov. Nathan finds early fishing success using grasshoppers as bait, Colton Gilman lands a roughly 10-pound sharptooth catfish and preserves it as soup and dried meat, and Douglas Meyer has a close nighttime encounter with a rhinoceros. The strain of isolation catches up with Gilman anyway; he taps out on day 4 after recognizing he was in a mental health crisis.

"Thirst Trap" is the season's roughest hour: Pablo Arguelles taps out on day 5 unable to stay hydrated, and Will Lamb is medically evacuated the same day after vomiting blood and being diagnosed with acute colitis. Kelsey builds a water-cache system while Douglas carves a storage container out of agave, and the cast passes waterbuck skeletons, a reminder of what the region does to animals that can't find water.

Episodes 4-6: rain, collapse, and a stone shelter

"Finding a Foothold" is the season's first no-tap-out episode. Nathan Olsen upgrades to 120-pound fishing line after losing gear to an oversized catfish and lands a 35-inch catch using a scorpion as bait, Dug North roasts a scorpion for food after removing its stinger, and Baha lands a 30-inch catfish worth about 1,700 calories on beetle and centipede bait.

"The Tempest" brings a rare desert downpour of about three inches, far beyond the area's typical monthly rainfall, flooding camps built along dry riverbeds and forcing Kelsey to rebuild on higher ground. Nathan catches an elephant shrew to use as catfish bait and converts it into a roughly 3,200-calorie fish. Douglas Meyer taps out on day 14, weighing the storm against worry over his father's declining health, and the episode ends with Dug North collapsing near his camp.

"Purpose" picks up right after that fainting spell, and Dug taps out the same day 14, telling the crew he was keeping a promise to his wife to prioritize safety. Kelsey's cooking stove explodes while she prepares a 15-inch catfish (she is unharmed), and Nathan begins the season's defining construction project, a dry-stack stone shelter.

Episodes 7-10: three finalists and a 34-day finish

"Echoes of Emptiness" sees Baha Mahmutov tap out on day 19, worn down by weeks of nightly fire-maintenance struggles without a ferro rod. Nathan Olsen lands a nearly four-foot catfish fishing at night, and Kelsey Loper gets an emotional lift from an encounter with a giant tortoise in the middle of a severe calorie deficit.

"Weak Spot" narrows the field to a final three. Kelsey fends off a troop of roughly 40 baboons with bear spray, Katie Rydge, fishless since day 1, survives on foraged buffalo thorn leaves, acacia seeds, wormwood, and wild garlic, and Nathan's stone shelter partially collapses on day 24. All three report losing 20 pounds or more.

"The Promised Land" follows the finalists' diverging endgames: Nathan finishes rebuilding his shelter with a termite-mound-clay waterproofed roof, Kelsey, no longer able to draw her bow, shifts entirely to fishing with maggots, and Katie treks roughly four miles toward the coast in search of mussels.

The finale, "No Regrats," closes the season: Katie taps out on day 28 after losing about 31 pounds, Kelsey follows on day 33 with malnutrition-related heart palpitations, and Nathan Olsen is declared the winner on day 34 after an emotional surprise visit from his son Isaiah during a medical check. He was the season's only contestant who never tapped out.

How many episodes are in Alone season 12?

Ten, each covering roughly three to six days of competition, with a two-week scheduling gap between episodes 3 and 4 in early July 2025. Episodes 1 and 2 are effectively a split premiere: each introduces five of the ten contestants over the same opening four days, so the field isn't fully on screen until the second hour. That makes it one of the shorter seasons by episode count; most US seasons run 11 to 13 hours.
